The writing spaces that I use the most are word processing, Facebook posting, and pen and paper. Word processing allows me to type fast and see a finished product instantly and be able to correct my mistakes using the backspace key. I can transform my writing using different fonts and colors and instantly import research from the Internet instead of finding a quote in a book and then transferring the quote to my writing. In the end, I can print off multiple copies of what I wrote. However, with a pen and paper I can’t print off multiple copies and use different fonts. When writing with a pen and paper, my handwriting is static and doesn’t change or enhance. Plus, my writing becomes sloppy as I keep writing and become tired and the more mistakes I make the harder my ideas become to evaluate and comprehend. With typing, my ideas are crisp and clean and easy to understand. Facebook posting is a whole different means of evaluation of ideas. Sentences are broken up with poor punctuation. No longer do I care if the idea makes sense, but just that it is out there and invited a fast response. The Facebook positing language or at least mine is short and to the point without the worries of presentation. With Facebook posting, I can comment on individual’s photos and previous comments by other users very much like the structure of blogs. With this kind of writing space, individuals are getting feedback for the information that was posted online.
Word processing and Facebook posting remediate pen and paper, because as the digital age progresses new technologies (word processing and posting messages online) will erase the old technologies (pen and paper). Less and less individuals are using handwritten means to communicate, because it takes longer to share information. Word processing can be used to create a message and then the information can be instantly shared via email or a blog. With this technology, handwritten messages or ideas are harder to share and do not fulfill our need for instant gratification that Facebook posting creates. With posting, instant gratification occurs since other users can comment on photos and journal-like entries. Computers remeditate old technologies since the world works on the idea of immediacy—actions being watched and experience instantly. With this instant gratification of new technologies, it is difficult to still use the older mediums, or forms like pen and paper since gratification takes a longer amount of time to experience.
